Back in September, Shaun Davies, Telford’s MP, spoke in Parliament to discuss the positive impact that free Breakfast Clubs have on Telford’s children and parents, and asked the Minister “when can we have some more in Telford?”.
Today it has been announced almost 1,600 children will benefit after 5 schools were successful, joining Lawley Primary who opened their free Breakfast Club last year.
The schools which will join Lawley primary are:
- Holmer lake
- John Randall
- Windmill primary
- Woodland’s primary
- And William Reynolds primary
The Free Breakfast Club scheme is part of this Government’s larger mission to tackle child poverty, on track to secure the biggest reduction in child poverty within a single parliament.
The clubs will ensure that every child receives a meal to start their day, so they are ready to learn. It will also allow more time for parents to manage work and the school run and put up to £450 back into the pockets of Telford families.
Shaun Davies MP said “I’ve made it a personal mission to see more free breakfast clubs open across Telford, because I know just how much of a difference they make. That’s why I’m delighted that another five schools have now joined the initiative, helping to ensure that every child begins their school day with a proper meal.
Our children and young people in Telford deserve the very best opportunities, and this is another step toward giving them the strongest possible start to their day.”
Bridget Phillipson, Secretary of State for Education, said “Free breakfast clubs sit right at the heart of Labour’s Plan for Change, breaking the link between background and success for families all over the country. Breakfast clubs can have a transformative impact on the lives of millions of children, feeding hungry tummies and fuelling hungry minds, so every child begins the day ready to learn.”
The clubs are set to open this April, making a substantial difference to both children’s and parent’s day to day lives.
